Death Notes: Husband - Amon Colbenson Saboe

Death records microfilm, Fayette County, Iowa. Amon C. Saboe. Male. Age 60 years 1 month 27 days. Farmer. Died June 7, 1917. Married. Born Iowa. Died Dover Township. Cause of death: carcinoma. Burial Hauge Cemetery.

General Notes: Husband - Amon Colbenson Saboe

From the "Past and Present of Fayette County, Iowa," 1910. B.F. Brown & Co., Indianapolis, Indiana.

"Amon C. Saboe. Among the most prominent citizens of the northern part of Fayette county must be ranked Amon C. Saboe, for he has made this locality his home since babyhood and has been active in the general progress of the community. His birth occurred in Dover township in 1857, the son of is experience and followed this line for one year in Wisconsin; however, he soon began working on the farm and in May, 1851, settled on the farm now owned by Amon C. Saboe, of this review. He first purchased forty acres where the buildings stand. Prospering from year to year as a result of his excellent business qualities, he added additional forties until he had eleven forties, or four hundred forty acres. He became quite well-to-do and was an influential citizen there, and he carried on general farming and stock raising on an extensive scale, having cleared most of the land himself, assisting the hands in the actual work of preparing the soil for cultivation. His son, Amon C. cleared perhaps one-half of the place. The father first lived in a dug-out where the present comfortable dwelling stands, though before its erection he lived for some time in a log house. All the present buildings were erected by him except the barn, which Amon C. built; it is a substantial structure, fifty-six by seventy-six feet, with a fourteen-foot shed, twenty-six-foot posts and a driveway fifty-six by sixteen feet.

The father of Amon C. Saboe was very active in politics, being first a Whig, later a Republican. He held a position on the school board for a great many years and always took an active interest in the affairs of his county. He and his wife reared nine children, eight of whom are still living.

Amon C. Saboe was educated in the public schools of his native community and he began working on the home farm when but a mere lad, and he has driven a reaper for forty-five years consecutively on the same farm, having begun with a hand-rake when seven years of age; now he rides behind a modern McCormick self-binder. He challenges the state to break the record. He purchased the homestead in 1892, consisting of two hundred and seventy-five acres, his father having sold two hundred and eighty acres. The place is now widely known as the Turkey Valley Stock Farm. He has one hundred and fifty hogs at a time, preferring the Poland-China breed. He well understands the successful handling of hogs and has never had cholera among them. He also keeps from fifty to seventy-five head of cattle. Corn and oats are his chief grains. He has half interest in a general store at Ossian, Iowa, known as the John Moe Mercantile Company, and in all his busines relations he has been very successful.

Mr. Saboe was married in 1892 to Inger FOSSAAN, who was born and reared on the farm just north of that owned by Mr. Saboe. She is the daughter of Ole O. and Inger CHRISTIAN FOSSAAN, who came from Norway in 1852, locating on the farm mentioned above, which is still in the family. This family was always active in township affairs, and highly respected people here. One child, Cora Julia, has been born to Mr. and Mrs. Saboe, and they have an adopted son, Albert Fossaan, a son of Mr. Saboe's brother-in-law. They have also reared Oliver Fossaan and Emma Fossaan.

Mr. Saboe and family are members of the Lutheran church. Politically, Mr. Saboe is a Republican in national affairs and independent locally. He has never aspired to public office, but he has been a member of the local school board for about fifteen years, eleven of which were consecutive; most of the time he was president or secretary of the board. Personally he is a genial, straightforward and hospitable gentleman whom everybody honors and respects.

Father, businessman Fosaaen dies
He leaves wife, 9 children, store

By Jessie-Lynne Kerr
Times-Union staff writer,

Knute Arthur Fosaaen Sr., who established Cando Appliance, a washer and dryer sales and service business, on Beach Boulevard 50 years ago, died at home Tuesday of an inoperable aortic aneurysm. He was 85 and had lived in Jacksonville since 1950.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, 6801 Merrill Road. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service. Burial will be next week in Cando, N.D.
A native of Cando, Mr. Fosaaen worked on his parents' farm in Egeland, N.D., and in the Civilian Conservation Corps before World War II. Joining the Army, he served in the South Pacific with the 164th Regiment of the Americal Division.
At the end of the war, Mr. Fosaaen was stationed at Camp Blanding, where he met and married his wife of 57 years, Dolores, who was working in a defense warehouse there.
The young couple moved to California but returned to Jacksonville in 1950; Mr. Fosaaen opened Cando Appliance in 1953. The business now is owned and operated by some of his children and has been expanded to include service and repair of commercial laundry equipment and a coin-operated laundry.
"Dad felt he could better serve his customers by only dealing in washers and dryers," said a son, Jerome Fosaaen of St. Augustine. "He felt that by limiting himself to just fixing washers and dryers and only certain brands at that, he could give better service."
Mr. Fosaaen was devoted to his nine children, who include two sets of twins, his son said.
"We grew up on Beach Boulevard and we all went to Hogan-Spring Glen Elementary and we all graduated from Englewood High School. I can remember Dad getting us up at the crack of dawn so he could take us swimming before school. There was a beautiful spring-fed borrow pit we called Crystal Lake where we would swim. Most of it was later filled in when they built the Hart Expressway."
Mr. Fosaaen also would pick up his children at school after classes and take them on repair jobs with him, Jerome Fosaaen said.
"Sometimes he'd schedule jobs at the Beaches for late in the afternoon and we'd get to go swimming in the ocean when he finished a job," he said. "He really enjoyed life and he enjoyed his children, taking us on camping trips to Key West, Mexico, the Smoky Mountains, Iowa and North Dakota.
"He also had an air of spontaneity about him. When he learned there would be a partial eclipse of the sun that would be visible from Atlanta, he woke us up before dawn and drove us to Atlanta to see the eclipse."
Mr. Fosaaen was a charter member and past president of Gateway to Florida Lodge 3-541 of the Sons of Norway and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
In addition to his wife and son, Mr. Fosaaen is survived by eight other children, Knute "Bo" Fosaaen Jr. of Jacksonville, Ardyth "Susie" Fosaaen of Martinsburg, W.V., and her twin brother, Ardyn "Van" Fosaaen of Jacksonville, Debra Fosaaen of Riverdale, Md., Sharon White of Jacksonville and her twin sister, Karon Plasha of Arlington, Va., Ken Fosaaen of Morristown, Tenn., and Jon Fosaaen of Jacksonville; a sister, Ragnhild Johnson of Clarisa, Minn.; five grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

General Notes: Wife - Laura Bertine Fosaaen

Gunder Nerlie was born in 1887, in a log cabin in the woods near the Springfield Lutheran Church. He was the son of Engel Nerlie and Marit Sylveth Nerlie. His father was born in 1859 in Trondheim, Norway, and died in 1943 in Iowa. Marit was born in 1856 in Trondheim, Norway. As a young girl she was a herd-girl, taking a big herd of cattle up to the top of the mountains, or setter, staying alone all summer, and milking the cows and making cheese. Marit died in 1932 in Iowa. Gunder's brothers and sisters were Ida, Henry, Mabel, Olga, Bessie, Marie, and Iver.
Gunder married Laura Fosaaen in 1914 at the S. H. Lee home in Springfield Township. Laura was born in 1892 near the Turkey River south of Ossian. She was baptized by Rev. Paul Koren. Her parents were Ole Fosaaen and Ingeborg Kloster Fosaaen. They were both born at West Union. Her brothers and sister were Oscar, Oliver, Emma, and Albert. Ingeborg died when Laura was about 5 years old, and since Ole was unable to care for his young children, Laura was raised in the foster home of Mary and Stinner Lee and their children Miller, Melvin, and Eleanor. Laura received her early education in a rural school near her home, and continued her education through her life-long love of reading. Laura and Gunder farmed throughout their married life and Gunder was also a teamster. They had six daughters, Arlene, Ethel, Olga, Lorraine, Sylvia, and Barbara. While Gunder farmed, Laura contributed to the family's livelihood by maintaining a large garden and canning vegetables and fruits, many quarts at a time in a big wash boiler on the wood stove. Even during the Depression, the family never lacked food. In 1938, Gunder died, leaving Laura to finish raising their family. Barbara, the youngest, was only 4 at the time. The family moved from the farm to Ossian, where Laura became a telephone operator. Later Laura moved to Decorah and was employed there. In retirement she enjoyed staying with her now-married daughters and their families, maintaining an apartment in Decorah, and especially living at her summer home in the country north of Ossian. Here she continued gardening, raising strawberries, and raspberries in addition to vegetables and many flowers. Her green thumb, helped along by countless buckets of compost brought from an abandoned barn, contributed to huge and bountiful plants. In the winter Laura enjoyed making afghans, toys, and other gifts for her family. She especially enjoyed crocheting. Laura passed away on March 22, 1988.
Arlene, the oldest of Laura's daughters, was born in 1915 in Calmar. She moved as a young adult to Minneapolis and married Chuck Jenks. They had one daughter, Beth. Chuck passed away in 1968. Arlene continues to live in Minneapolis.
Ethel, the second daughter, was born in 1918 at the Stinner Lee farm near the Springfield Lutheran Church. She was an active member of her church choir. Dancing was a favorite pastime. Before her marriage, she was employed at the Heimark Jewelry Store in Ossian. In 1943, she married George Peck. They still live on a farm near Ossian. (See Diedrich Peck article for a detailed story.)
Olga, born March 14, 1920, married Clarence Hogenson on her 19th birthday. They became the parents of three children, two of whom died in infancy. Their son Don lives in Bettendorf. Don and his wife are parents of four sons, Jeff, Wayne, Scott, and Eric. Don is an independent insurance agent and JoAnn is a hairdresser. Clarence worked for the county. He passed away in 1949. Olga moved to Decorah and was employed at Graham's Department Store and later managed the Gold Bond Store. She also worked at the Winneshiek County Care Facility. Olga passed away in 1994.
Lorraine was born in 1925. She also moved to Minneapolis as a young adult. There she met and married Bob Lang. They lived in Minneapolis and Florida, and built a retirement home in Flowery Branch, Georgia, where they now live. They have three children, Steve, Sue, and Debbie.
Sylvia was born in 1929. She worked in the office of the Winneshiek County Superintendent of Schools prior to her marriage. In 1954, she married Danny Lien. Syl has worked for many years in the office of the county health nurse. Danny has been employed by the Fred Carlson Co. as office manager and accountant. Their son David is an engineer with General Motors. He and his wife, the former Lisa Cote, have three children, Ben, Sam, and Molly.
Barbara, born in 1934, married Jerry Reichow of Decorah. She was a homemaker and he was a professional football player, playing for the Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles, and the Minnesota Vikings. They became parents of Alan, Lori, and Jimmy. Barbara passed away in 1976.
Although the family is now spread geographically from Oregon to Florida, they remain close and enjoy their time together.
